Anniversary reflections
We celebrated five years of EHN this month! As founder and executive editor Elizabeth Hameeteman put it, this past year has allowed EHN to expand and “continue celebrating and promoting the work and achievements of historically marginalized scholars and practitioners while creating a sense of readerly community.” You can read Elizabeth’s full reflections here.
We shared our Top 3 pieces from the archives on the site as a celebration of the amazing work in EHN over the past half-decade:
Amelie Bonney, “Toxic Beauty: Poisonous Colours in the Artificial Flower Industry”
April Anson, “No One Is a Virus: On American Ecofascism”
Asmae Ourkiya, “Bodies and Sexuality in Gilead: A Queer Ecofeminist Reading of The Handmaid’s Tale”
My environment now: Natascha Otoya
We asked Natascha, a PhD candidate at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and a content editor for EHN, about her environment this month.
Habitat
I'm currently in Washington DC and fall has just begun. I'm wearing a hoodie for the first time in months. I miss the strong sun and long summer days already, but the earlier golden hour of fall is also beautiful!
Digging
I recently got into aerial yoga and I've been having lots of fun getting upside down in the tall hammocks we use in this form of yoga. It's a great way to unwind and stretch from the tightness of long hours sitting and writing my dissertation.
Buds
I'm going home to Brazil in October and I'm very excited! It's my dad's 90th birthday (!!!) and the first time since the pandemic the family will be together. Also, a friend is coming along and I'm excited to show them my hometown, Rio de Janeiro.
As always, if you are interested in sharing a piece in any language on EHN, send an email to contact@envhistnow.com introducing yourself & pitching an idea.
